A look at the best and worst performances from the RBs at the NFL Combine."The NFL Combine gives players a chance to showcase their talents in front of the very best scouts the NFL has to offer for all 32 teams. More than just the on-field drills and measurements Womens Barry Sanders Jersey , the Combine represents a hub of activity where players meet with every team, interview privately with some, and talk to the media about their experiences. The 2019 running back class is not a strong one. With no top-tier talent pressing for first-round selection, the mid-tier group is solid but has a lot of folks who are trying to separate themselves from a very big herd. Since it’s RAS season, we’re going to take a look at what the best Combine performances were for running backs, and some of the worst. The BestAlex Barnes, Kansas State Few players helped their draft stock more than Barnes, who was a relatively unheralded back out of a normally strong program in Kansas State. Barnes posted only a decent 40-yard dash of 4.59, which is fine for a guy pushing 226 pounds, but he went on to crush both explosiveness and agility drills. Teams looking for a Latavius Murray type of back may look to Barnes to add some explosion to a backfield that already has an established starter.Karan Higdon, Michigan Higdon was a bell cow for Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines, but I’m not sure any player further exceeded projections than he did. Few were expecting Higdon to measure fast, and he did. Not many expected his explosiveness to show out Womens Levine Toilolo Jersey , but he did anyway. Looking at a late Day 3 selection for a team with an established backfield, Karan Higdon helped his stock immensely by showing that he can hang with the best athletes on the field. One ding to his day was his lack of participation in on-field drills, a concern since receiving wasn’t a staple of his game at Michigan and you’d think he’d want to showcase to teams that he could bring it there as well.Miles Sanders, Penn State I’m not sure what’s in the water down in Happy Valley, but Sanders was on fire during measurements. After Saquon Barkley nearly broke the RAS record last year, Sanders was gunning for it all the way, and though he came up short, he still managed to hit marks either above average or elite in every single metric. Sanders was already pretty well thought of in NFL circles, but now there’s going to be fan hype and the certain (but unwarranted) Barkley comps. The WorstElijah Holyfield, Georgia Getting mid-round hype entering the day, Holyfield bombed speed and explosion drills before wisely sitting out of the agility testing. Running a 4.79 is pretty much all you need to do to get teams to turn away. Even power backs are expected to have some kind of speed in case they break free, but you need explosion to do that and Holyfield flubbed that as well. Not a great day and it certainly pushed him further down in Day 3 if not out altogether.Devin Singletary, Florida AtlanticSingletary was one of the guys getting RB1 hype entering the offseason and that continued up until the Combine. With 67 college touchdowns over three seasons Eli Harold Jersey , it’s not hard to see why. When he measured in so tiny, the flags started to go up, and when he ran a 4.66, you could start counting the nails going into that draft coffin. Singletary may still find his way into Day 3, but it’s more likely the Combine pushed him down all the way into the third day of the draft, even in a weak class.David Montgomery, Iowa StateAnother guy with RB1 hype, another bad day. Montgomery showed decent size and poor speed, enough for people to start making Kareem Hunt comparisons. Those ended when he also posted poor explosiveness drills, making such a comp seem kind of silly since it already didn’t fit stylistically. He will probably still hear his name called on Day 2 of the draft, but this wasn’t the Combine performance he likely imagined. The Seattle Seahawks have certainly found their identity on offense. And, surprisingly, it’s not through the arm of their franchise quarterback. The Seahawks want to pound opposing teams on the ground with their run game. They lead the NFL in yards from zone read and option runs this season.According to the folks at NFL Matchup and ESPN T.J. Jones Jersey White , Seattle has rushed for 300 yards on those plays, averaging over five yards per carry. In total, the Seahawks are only averaging 4.3 yards per carry—good for 16th in the NFL. They’re finding the most success running with zone read run plays.“I think they’re right where they want to be,” Lions coach Matt Patricia said. “Schottenheimer and Coach Carroll just kind of got the downhill run game going. Brian and I went against each other for a long time when he was at the Jets and I know he likes that downhill kind of pound-it run game.”The key for the Lions this week is to force Russell Wilson to hand the ball off on those plays. Teams have been fairly successful so far this year at limiting Wilson’s effectiveness on run plays this season. In 2017, Wilson averaged nearly 37 yards per game on the ground. So far this year he’s averaging just over 10 yards per game. On the flip side, the Lions are giving up an average of 5.3 yards per carry, which is last in the NFL.Now that the Lions added Damon Harrison via trade earlier this week, the Lions should roll the dice with the Seahawks on inside runs and force their running backs to beat them rather than Russell Wilson. It’s clear the Seahawks’ game plan is to control the ball on the ground. They want to keep the Lions’ offense off the field and limit the the pass rush.Opponent snapshotThese Seahawks aren’t the Seahawks of old. There’s no Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, or Kam Chancellor. But their defense is still one of the best in the league. Russell Wilson remains as steady as they come at quarterback. He continues to play well even though the team around him seems to be completely rebuilding. Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY SportsSeahawks’ biggest threat Tyler LockettDespite only having 23 catches on the season, Lockett has scored in five out six games in 2018.While Lockett isn’t a threat down in and down out Womens Darius Slay Jersey , he is capable of taking the top off the defense. The Lions can’t afford to give the Seahawks any easy touchdowns on Sunday. So far this season Lockett has scored touchdowns of 51, 52, and 39 yardsThe Lions, however, are towards the top of the NFL at limiting explosive plays. They’ve limited teams to just 27 big plays this season according to NFL Matchup. The Lions have done a good job of keeping plays in front of them this season, and that will need to continue on Sunday.Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY SportsSeahawks’ weak linkPass protectionThe Seahawks upgraded their offensive line this offseason, but they didn’t necessarily bring in premium pass protectors. Guys like D.J. Fluker and J.R. Sweezy are more known for their run blocking than protection. This will be a unique battle between the two teams as the Lions aren’t generating a consistent pass rush. They’re getting pressure on just 25.8 percent of passes, 25th in the league. But they have seemed to find a knack for creating sacks, tied for fourth in the NFL with 21 over their first six games. The Seahawks have gotten better over their last three games. A lot of that has to do with a much improved run game.Seahawks Revitalized Run GameWeeksRushes/GameRush Yards/GameInterceptionsSacksWeeksRushes/GameRush Yards/GameInterceptionsSacksStats via pro-football-reference.comBottom lineBoth teams are enigmas, and both teams are playing better recently than they were to start the season. The Seahawks are coming off of their bye week after a trip to London in Week 6. If the Lions can get off to a quick start—they’re the third ranked offensive in the first quarter according to Football Outsiders DVOA—they should be able to force the Seahawks to throw the ball more and take advantage of suspect pass protection late in the game.PredictionLions 28 Seahawks 20
